En la noble Francia de un tiempo dorado, donde el alba fulgía con rayo sagrado, un gentilhombre de porte sin par, Alfonso de luces, de andar singular. Con talle erguido, mirada osada, galante, altivo, de estampa dorada, paseaba en Rue Chanoinesse aquel día, con su hermanastro, André, en compañía. Mas he aquí, en la bruma matinal, surgió un varón de aspecto cabal. Con voz apremiante su ayuda imploró, mas André, airado, desdén le mostró. Con mano veloz y gesto indignado, con gran atrevimiento lo hubo abofeteado. Y no bastando su honra ultrajar, su oro y bolsa osó arrebatar. Mas Alfonso, noble y justo varón, con hondo pesar y grave aflicción, su bolsa al hombre presto entregó, y con dulce verbo su honor reparó. ¡Oh, rueda del sino, cuán dulce es tu juego! Que el pobre y el alto se cruzan en ruegos. El noble de cuna que osó mancillar, del rey, sin saberlo, osó despojar. En la alta corte, en un baile real, entre luces y danzas de aroma inmortal, el monarca en su trono radiante miró, y a Alfonso y André su mano llamó. "¿Recordáis, caballeros, aquel desatino?" Su voz retumbó con eco divino. Alfonso, afable, su testa inclinó, mas André, cual estatua, helado quedó. "Alfonso, en vos gran virtud he hallado, por ello os concedo un feudo sagrado. Seréis desde ahora mi hombre de ley, mi siervo más alto, mi amigo más fiel." ¡Oh, rueda del sino, cuán dulce es tu juego! Que el noble arrogante cayó en su desvelo. Quien actúa con honra su gloria hallará, mas quien osa afrenta, afrenta tendrá. Y así en la corte de rancio esplendor, el justo halló gracia, el vil, su dolor. Que el sino castiga con mano certera, y el noble deshonra, mas la justicia impera.
