Diaphragm. **Remember:** Relation of the esophagus to the aorta: - In the superior mediastinum: The arch of the aorta crosses the left side of the esophagus to become the descending thoracic aorta, which now lies on the left side of the esophagus in the upper part of the posterior mediastinum. - In the lower part of the posterior mediastinum: The descending thoracic aorta deviates gradually to the right, crossing behind the esophagus. - At the esophageal opening of the diaphragm: The aorta lies to the right side and posterior to the esophagus.
