होलीका दहन की कहानी होली का त्योहार भारत में बहुत धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है। इसके पीछे एक पौराणिक कथा है, जो भक्त प्रह्लाद, राजा हिरण्यकश्यप और उसकी बहन होलिका से जुड़ी हुई है। होलीका दहन की कथा प्राचीन काल में हिरण्यकश्यप नाम का एक असुरराज था। वह स्वयं को भगवान मानता था और चाहता था कि सभी लोग उसकी पूजा करें। लेकिन उसका पुत्र प्रह्लाद भगवान विष्णु का परम भक्त था और हर समय उनका नाम जपता था। यह बात हिरण्यकश्यप को बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं थी। उसने प्रह्लाद को विष्णु-भक्ति छोड़ने के लिए कई बार समझाया, लेकिन प्रह्लाद अपनी भक्ति में अडिग रहा। हिरण्यकश्यप ने अपने पुत्र को मारने के लिए कई प्रयास किए, लेकिन हर बार भगवान विष्णु ने प्रह्लाद की रक्षा की। अंत में, उसने अपनी बहन होलिका की मदद ली। होलिका को यह वरदान प्राप्त था कि वह आग में नहीं जल सकती थी। हिरण्यकश्यप ने योजना बनाई कि होलिका प्रह्लाद को गोद में लेकर आग में बैठेगी, जिससे प्रह्लाद जल जाएगा और होलिका सुरक्षित रहेगी। लेकिन जब होलिका प्रह्लाद को लेकर अग्नि में बैठी, तो भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से प्रह्लाद को कुछ नहीं हुआ, बल्कि होलिका ही आग में जलकर भस्म हो गई। यह बुराई पर अच्छाई की विजय का प्रतीक है। इसी घटना की याद में होलीका दहन किया जाता है, जिसमें लकड़ियाँ और उपले जलाकर बुराई का अंत करने की परंपरा निभाई जाती है।
